The Healing Power of Integrated Art Therapy for Physical Health and Healing

Inspired by Dr Bernie Siegel

On 13 July 24, I had the chance to speak to the members at Breast Cancer Foundation. I spoke about how our emotions and mental health are deeply connected to our physical health. My work is greatly influenced by Dr. Bernie Siegel, a famous surgeon who wrote, "Love, Medicine, and Miracles." I recalled reading his book nearly 22 years ago.  At that time, the concept of mind-body medicine was just starting to emerge, and I was so blown away by his insights. I was so excited to discover how our emotions and mental state can profoundly impact our physical health and healing.

Dr. Siegel's belief in the power of emotional health is the foundation of my work in Integrated Art Therapy (IAT). IAT offers a safe place where you can explore and take care of your emotions, which can help you feel better overall.

What is Integrated Art Therapy (IAT)?

IAT/Art therapy is more than just making pretty pictures. It's about expressing feelings that are hard to put into words. Whether you paint, draw, sculpt, or just doodle, you're giving a voice to your thoughts and emotions.

In my sessions, you don't need to be an artist or have any artistic skills. I practice IAT, which combines traditional counselling with art. We start with a simple art activity, and then we talk about what you created. You will be amazed at what you discover just by describing the image or talking about the art-making process.

One of the best things about IAT/art therapy is that it helps you express your inner world. This can give you quick relief from pent-up emotions. You don't need to be an artist to benefit from it. You'll find clarity and solutions to your problems, leading to real change and personal growth.

Making Art Therapy Part of Your Self-Care

IAT can be a great addition to your current support systems and medical treatments. As Dr. Siegel said, "The truth is, we all struggle. We all hit our low points. The key is knowing how to pick yourself up." IAT can provide that key to unlock our ability to heal, grow, and thrive.

Let's choose love, creativity, and healing. Let's turn our struggles into chances for growth and change. We all have the strength within us to overcome and flourish. Adding IAT to your self-care routine can boost your emotional and mental well-being, promoting overall healing and supporting your physical health.
